Sandstone Point Marina Upgrade Set to Boost Commercial Fishing Industry

The Sandstone Point community is about to see a major transformation with the multi-million-dollar upgrade of the newly renamed Sandstone Point Marina. Designed to improve access and functionality for the local commercial fishing industry, the redevelopment promises to deliver both economic and lifestyle benefits to the region.

Supporting Local Commercial Fishing

A key feature of the marina upgrade is its focus on meeting the needs of local commercial fishers. The revamped facilities will include additional berths for small vessels, upgraded marine repair services, and an enhanced boat ramp to support launching trailer boats. Importantly, these improvements will ensure safer, more efficient access for working fishers who rely on the marina every day.

Project spokesperson Josh Foote confirmed that local feedback played a vital role in shaping the plans:

“While some existing facilities, such as the boat dry storage and travel lift, would no longer be available, we have introduced changes to ensure marina users retain access to essential services such as repair and refuelling.”

A Modernised Waterfront Experience

The redevelopment is not just about functionality—it’s also about enhancing the visitor and resident experience. Future upgrades will include:

  • Expanded dining options and a waterfront deck.

  • New public green spaces and walkways, creating a more vibrant community hub.

  • Anchorage apartments, offering 70 residences with secure car parks, plus visitor facilities.

  • Over 250 square metres of exclusive recreation space, including a swimming pool, bicycle parking, and watercraft storage.

Anchorage is expected to set a new benchmark for architectural design in the region, blending functionality with lush landscaping and an abundance of greenery.

Balancing Industry with Community

The careful planning ensures that commercial operations and community enjoyment go hand in hand. By stepping back larger infrastructure like sheds to reduce visual impact, the design delivers both practical efficiency and aesthetic appeal. As Foote explained:

“The current zoning would allow for a large 15-metre-high marine industry building, but we felt that a stepped-back design with multiple smaller buildings would provide a much better outcome for the community.”

A Positive Outlook

This marks the first major marina redevelopment for the Sandstone Point area in more than 40 years. Once complete, it is expected to revitalise the local waterfront, create jobs, and secure the long-term viability of the commercial fishing industry while also attracting new residents and visitors.

The upgraded marina stands as a forward-looking investment in both industry and lifestyle—a true win for the community.
